Abstract

Specifically, the purpose of this study is to investigate the institutional positioning of graduate degrees in criminology. The information that was taken from Peterson's Guide to Graduate Programmes in the Humanities and Social Sciences for the years 1994, 1984, and 2004 was used to construct a prototype framework. On the basis of the requirements that are now in place, graduate programmes that contained the word "criminology" in their department name, programme name, or degree name were identified. The field of criminology is often found in departments that combine the fields of criminology and criminal justice, as opposed to being placed within sociology departments, according to the findings of a number of studies. Between the years 1984 and 2004, there was a steady and continuous increase in the number of criminology programmes that were available to students. For the purpose of gaining a comprehensive understanding of the elements that influenced the decision about the program's location and name inside the institution, a comprehensive analysis was carried out on seven departments that provided complete data.
